Stereotype threat: How does it feel?
This unit helps teachers understand language-related stereotype threats. Participants have to provide some information on personal background details (sex, age), and then evaluate their abilities in a number of domains (mathematical skills, language skills). They learn how these little bits of information can affect one’s evaluation and even performance in tests. This little experiment is followed by a discussion of self-fulfilling prophecies that gradually narrows down from general stereotypes (gender, ethnicity) to stereotypes targeting linguistic background and other language-related aspects in school contexts.
