Multilingualism Circle

Views and insights on the topic of multilingualism

This unit discusses widespread prejudices against multilingualism and helps pupils develop arguments based on findings from linguistic and pedagogical studies: How does multilingualism work? What is part of “linguistic competence”? How does the myth of “double semilingualism” come about? Statements from the public discussion (of authors, journalists, a businessman, a lawyer, a teacher, a comedian, and an imam) reflecting different attitudes and experiences with multilingualism and linguistic stereotypes are presented in a plenary session. Pupils discuss these statements in small groups, further aided by cards with selected quotes from linguistic and pedagogical associations summarising research results on multilingualism and nonstandard language use. In a plenary discussion, the groups present and compare their results.
