Linguistic Landscapes

Language that we see around us: An introduction to an secondary school project.

This unit makes participants aware of their linguistic surroundings, and explains how the project “Lingustic Landscapes” works at secondary school. Participants join in a “photo safari” where they go on a walk in their neighbourhood and take pictures of visual representations of language: signs, stickers, advertisements, graffiti, hand-written notes, tags, and so on. Which different languages and dialects are represented in the public sphere? In what way is multilingualism visualised? How does this linguistic landscape reflect power relations?
