Lingi the Stork
Linguistic diversity in kindergarten: Appreciating children’s linguistic backgrounds
This unit supports an appreciation of linguistic diversity, the range of speakers’ repertoires, and the plurality of linguistic customs and patterns in different families in order to strengthen children’s self-confidence as a key to successful (language) learning. This is done viaa kindergarten project “Lingi the Stork” that is presented to participants: Toy stork “Lingi” visits the children and asks questions about their languages, dialects, styles, and then is deeply impressed by the children’s reports. The participants see the didactic movie “Lingi the Stork”, get to know the materials and discuss how this project could be integrated in their kindergarten group. How can we best value the wide range of children’s language competence? What barriers and obstacles are there to overcome?
