Lingi the Stork

Linguistic diversity in primary school: Appreciating children’s linguistic backgrounds

This unit supports an appreciation of linguistic diversity, the range of speakers’ repertoires, and the plurality of linguistic customs and patterns in different families in order to strengthen children’s self-confidence as a key to successful (language) learning. Toy stork “Lingi” visits the children and asks questions about their languages, dialects, styles. He goes home with one child at a time, stays with him/her overnight, and then is deeply impressed by the different usages of language in children’s families, which he reports (via the child) in morning circle next day in class. He brings along a set of interesting didactic materials, including a song on linguistic diversity, a little suitcase, and picture cards and a personalised diary that encourage children to explore linguistic diversity in different contexts.
