Ball contacts (2)

Conversations before a football game.

This unit supports a new perspective on informal spoken language in general and on young people’s vernaculars in particular. Participants see a video sequence from the film “Ball Contacts” that shows three young men in informal conversations with their friends before a football game, using variously Turkish-German code-switching, standard-close informal German, and informal German with a palatalisation of [ç] that has become a shibboleth (“isch”) that in Germany marks young people as having a Middle Eastern background. Participants analyse these ‘football’ conversations, supported by transcripts and, in the cae of Turkish passages, translations. They discuss the grammatical regularities underlying nonstandard characteristics in young people’s speech, and confront this with their initial impressions of the speakers.
